The challenge of the platform was to increase engagement. But how do you get your users to interact more with your product? And where to start?
For almost 2 years I worked for Magnet.me as a UX/ UI designer.
For a platform like Magnet.me active users are key for their revenue. Their paying customers are recruiters who 'buy' to reach students looking for a job.
Through impressions of their vacancies, likes and connects they get in contact with potential employees. To grow the platform needed to grow the number of users that interacted with the vacancies.
One of the main insights of the UX Research was that students (the users) had no idea what to search for. In the old interface there was nothing but an empty search bar and they felt overwhelmed. They had no clue what they want in a job and what titles to look for.
To overcome the 'cold start problem' we designed suggestions based on their study background. This idea was prototyped and directly tested with students on campus.
This design improvement was directly implemented after. It increased searches with 40%*.
*Numbers are not allowed to be published, but give an indication.
Another big insight was that students had no idea what the function of the actions on the platform were (like and connect). So they simply did not use it.
Therefore we designed, tested and iterated on an intuitive and visual way of showing 'progress' on our platform.
This explains how the platform works and gives them the idea of progress; which is the best motivator.
On the same interface we experimented with various recommended job feeds. With advanced recommender system design and devs collaborated for an optimal solutions to get users engaged on Home.
